Necessary for:

• lighting protection
• minimizing noise in the shack to be received by the antenna

The coaxial cable shield picks up noise in the shack and on its way to the antenna. The antenna can receive this noise by electromagnetic coupling. For best noise performance the coaxial cable shield should not carry any noise.
